Well ladies it’s that time again…the ballot box is out and waiting for your entries!

Our first GREY Girl, Nancy, had an absolute blast and did a great job of being the face of GREY.

When I walked into the store this past summer and saw the promotion, I have to admit, I was pretty excited about it but was positive that alot of other women would feel the same. Great hair, awesome make up and of course, the clothes! My chances of having my name drawn seemed rather slim but I fell in love with a jacket that day and entered away. To be honest, it seemed like a really good idea at the time.

A month lather, when Nicole called to tell me that my name had been picked, I was shocked, excited and of course, very nervous. I phoned my best friend and was in total disbelief. The truth was that I was feeling a bit nervous, not so much for myself (ok, I little bit for myself), but I really wanted it to be successful for the store. A few days before the now infamous phone call, I had mentioned to my husband how cool it would be to be involved in a photoshoot for the day. I was thinking more along the lines of holding the light for the camera man and not actually participating in the shoot itself!

With the wardrobe picked, the day had arrived and we were off and running. From hair to makeup, I was feeling completely pampered. Nicole, Leah and their team of professionals took this stay-at-home mom who was for sure a bit nervous and worked their magic to make me feel pretty glamorous and relaxed for the day. I couldn’t have done it without them and honestly, just when I think they’ve done enough, they tell me something else really cool about the promotion and I get excited all over again.

What are our fall favorites?

We’re so excited about this fall’s diverse styles with influences from the 50′s through to the 90′s. From big bright prints and sequins to jeans and tee’s, there is something to suit every style! Here are our top 10 faves of the season:

1. Black & white. Period.
2. Burgundy anything, socks, pants, purse, scarf, top…you get the idea.
3. Faux fur vests and faux feather vests – a fierce 70′s comeback.
4. Leather knee-high or over-the-knee boots in black, brown or cognac.
5. Big colorful jewellery. Stacked bracelets, layered necklaces, drop earrings.
6. Scarves scarves scarves, always scarves.
7. Neutrals worn head-to-toe.
8. Trousers with a slim leg, wide leg, flare or high-waist.
9. A sheer print blouse, maybe even with a tie-up bow at the neck.
10. Skirts. Above the knee in thick tweed or plaid, full calf length or a floor sweeping stunner.

This is something that many independent retailers deal with on a regular basis. Here are a few things to think about the next time you are planning an out of town shopping trip instead of shopping right here in Vernon. Local businesses are staffed by local residents; your friends and neighbors. You will get better service from people you know and who know you. Most local businesses are owned and managed by people who live in our community and who have a vested interest in the local economy, organizations and programs. Many of them are one-of-a-kind businesses that provide our community with its one-of-a-kind character. The healthier a retail or restaurant or service sector is, the more attractive it is to new businesses coming into the area, which creates more job opportunities and a healthier economy all around. Other considerations that are an increasing concern are more environmental: air pollution and gas consumption. The short of it is that buying local creates a thriving community.

What to wear for fall

Fall is infused with flavor from the 50’s all the way through to the 80’s. To keep on trend, pick up; polka dots, tie-neck blouses, high-waist pants, flares, shift dresses, bold patterns, bright colored skinny pants, chunky knits, beige neutrals, faux-fur vests, tall boots and chunky jewelry. If you’re just adding a few key pieces to your wardrobe, opt for the more classic pieces with a hint of trendy detail – you could try a sheer blouse in basic black with a tie-neck to make it more current. Let go of the old thought that “if you’ve already worn the trend once, don’t do it again”! This season is all about bringing back the ol’ favorites from the past.

How to care for denim

So you’ve invested in a great pair of jeans that lifts this and tucks that just right, but how do you make sure they stay like that!? Denim was widely used in the 19th century as an all-purpose trouser by sailors because it was super-durable and easy to wash. Having evolved from its original purpose, and now considered a fashion statement with varying washes and fits, denim’s concept remains the same: durable, versatile and easy to wash. The care basics that can be applied to all denim are to wash inside out in cool water and hang to dry. Since denim now is finished differently it can break down more easily with the heat and friction from the dryer – we’ve all had that hole show up in an inconspicuous place and wonder how it came to be!

How to sport the “no-bra” look/

While understanding the health benefits of going “free”, we also cannot deny that there are some sensitivities to doing so. If you must forgo the essential undergarment, opt for a fitted tank to layer with, or a top/dress with a shelf-bra built right in – that extra layer can really make all the difference. Be prepared for different daily settings (like the office, grocery shopping and weather changes) by taking layers with you – jackets, sweaters and vests all make a great addition to any outfit and will help a “National Geographic” scenario be avoided. Also there are many accessories that can act as a cover-up, like scarves. Even in warmer weather, a draping scarf can do the trick and look very fashionable. Either way, there are many options for women today that will help you be comfortable in every situation.

How to wear a sheer blouse?

We’ve all seen the disastrous fluorescent undergarments beneath an all-too sheer blouse. So how, then, can it be done right? The general rule to follow is to wear a body-conscious cami. Choose either a similar color and tone or go bold with something bright and contrasting. Either way, a cami is a safe choice that flatters everyone. But if you’re a bold fashionista we know there is nothing that will hold you back from trying out the trend. If that’s the case, opt for tone-on-tone undergarments and a blouse that is more “peek-a-boo” sheer than “I-should-be-paid-for-this-show” sheer: keep it classy. When the sheer blouse is well paired with a pencil skirt or skinny pant and wedge heels or boots you’ll end up a classy fashionista garnering the right attention.

How to look expensive

We get asked this all the time! Contrary to what you may think, you do not have to be rich-and-famous to look expensive. I promise. The keys? Tailoring, black-and-white, embellishments, simple lines and always accessorize! Oh, and the absolute MUST is to own it. Whatever you wear, top it off with your confidence because we cant just buy class. You know what they say – confidence is sexy! To add a posh flair to your wardrobe, have a collection of handbags, scarves, shoes, belts and jewelry. Investing in basics (see our Q&A How can I dress fashionably on a budget) is the ideal foundation to accessorize and accessories are the greatest (and cheapest) tools to look expensive.
